About Debbe

Hi! My name is Debbe Cannone and I am first and foremost a mother. I am the bio mom of three boys and the step mom to two girls and a boy ( I had to remarry to get my girls!!!). This made me eligible to be Nana Nonie to my first grandson, Roman, born in April of 2013, second grandson, Jaxon, born in October of 2015, and step Nana to eight grand babies!

I am a passionate supporter of birth. I believe in birth and a women’s innate ability to achieve this most transformative function in life.  I have been a volunteer birth doula with UCSD’s Hearts & Hands Volunteer Doula Program from 2012 to 2019 and was honored with the title of ‘UCSD Volunteer Doula of the Year‘ in 2013. This experience has been the most transformative of my life and has given me the opportunity to follow my passion and to support almost every type of birth:
  • Unmedicated; Supported by massage, position changes, hydrotherapy, aroma therapy, rebozo techniques, relaxation, effective breathing, counter pressure, acupressure, visualization, monitoring of fluid and food intake, hot/cold therapy, constant emotional and relational support and encouragement
  • Medicated; IV analgesics, Epidural and Spinal anesthesia as well as the use of Nitrous Oxide gas for pain relief
  • Assisted vaginal deliveries; forceps and suction
  • Cesarean births
  • VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean)
UCSD Medical Center is also a unique place to attend births as it offers the only in-hospital birth center (with labouring tubs in the rooms!) in the state. These births are attended by CNM staff midwives. There are also the traditional labor and delivery units that may be attended by either obstetricians and/or midwives.

Certified Lactation Education Councilor

I soon realized that the first thing a new mother needed assistance with after the birth of her new baby was the establishment of breastfeeding. Even though this is the most natural way to feed a baby and babies are born with innate actions that assist them in doing this (smell, rooting, sucking, head bobbing, etc.), it is still a learning experience for both the new mother and her baby. I became a certified lactation education counselor (CLEC) soon after joining Hearts & Hands to facilitate that learning. I have worked with new moms to be successful in breastfeeding even when there has been a need for separation from the baby after birth for health reasons.

Birth Boot Camp Instructor

Good prenatal childbirth education for the new parents was the next need I recognized. During labour and/or birth is not the time to be learning about a complication, an intervention or a procedure. I noticed that the parents that were prepared with this information prior to their birthing experience seemed to have less fear associated with these events, more confidence in dealing with them, and were better able to adapt their birth plans to their birthing circumstances. This inspired me to become a childbirth educator myself.  I researched long and hard before I discovered the Birth Boot Camp childbirth education curriculum. It was the most complete and evidence-based education I found available for new parents. Its 10-week length ensures adequate time for new parents to absorb and apply all the information on prenatal nutrition, labour, birth, medical interventions, as well as practice the techniques for relaxation and pain management before the birth of their baby.  It was also the most interesting in its presentation. It is designed to keep adult learners-including the mother’s partner-engaged in the material.

Birth Boot Camp Doula

Finally, I have become a Certified Birth Boot Camp Doula! I believe this training has prepared me to provide my families with the best relational labour and birth support possible. I look forward to supporting you.
I encourage all new parents to research the options that are available to find their best fit. One size does not fit all! If I turn out to be that person/fit for you, I will be committed to supporting you on your journey into mother/parenthood.

REMEMBER: YOU CAN HAVE AN AMAZING BIRTH!!!!!
